Software Update System Considerations

Before starting the Software Update System procedure, you should be aware of the following:

  • Each Software Update package cumulatively includes all previous updates. Thus any time you run the Software Update System procedure, no more than one Software Update package gets installed on any node.

  • You must ensure no jobs are in progress before deploying software updates. The Software Update System detects if jobs are currently active and prevents software update installation. Note that during software update installation, all DPX operations (scheduled jobs, management interface, etc.) are suspended.

  • You can identify the update level on any node by examining the contents of the patches.level file located in the product-directory\updates folder on that node, where product-directory- is the main PDX folder. The contents of the file is a four-digit string. Thus if the update level is 71, the string in the patches.level file is "0071".

  • The Software Update System described below uses a graphical user interface (GUI) and deploys the updates to remote nodes. You can alternatively install Software Update packages manually at the node that requires the update. This is described in Manual Software Update Installation. The Software Update System does not support GUI-based update on all operating systems supported by DPX. Manual software update installation is advised for those systems.

  • In some cases, the error message "CMAPI Exception" may appear when the update process restarts services. You can ignore the message. Note that you should always restart the management console after a software update.

  • The DPX controller service runs in the background after operating system startup. It is used to apply Java security updates. The Software Update System uses Java to perform update actions, therefore it can not apply a Java security update directly. Instead the DPX controller service applies such updates. Read knowledge base article 46623.

  • After the software update, clear the cache of your internet browser before accessing the DPX Online Help to ensure that the latest documentation updates are applied and display correctly.
