Defining a DPX NDMP Dump Backup of Predictable Snapshot Names for 7-Mode
There are many facilities that can create snapshots on NetApp storage servers, including regular snapshots scheduled directly by the controller and snapshots created by external programs such as NetApp’s SnapDrive, SnapManager, and SnapCreator. Many of the technologies can be configured to create a predictable snapshot name. For example, a NetApp controller can coordinate weekly snapshots of a primary storage volume, with the latest snapshot typically called weekly.0
. If you require automated snapshots, it is preferable to use a snapshot name format where the latest snapshot is always a predictable name. This makes is easier to set up a DPX NDMP Dump backup job that refers to this predictable name.
In cases where a predictable snapshot name is not available, DPX can utilize scripting to discover the latest job and schedule a backup to protect it.
If SMTape is the data format used, then knowing the snapshot names is not necessary as SMTape protects all the available snapshots.
