Backup Process

  1. When a backup begins, DPX issues a MOUNT request to ACSLS to mount any tape from a specific scratch pool (n) into a specific drive. DPX correlates the desired scratch pool to the BEXSn pool.

  2. ACSLS finds and mounts the tape. ACSLS tells DPX that the request is complete and passes back the bar code number of the tape.

  3. DPX uses the bar code number to automatically label the tape and adds the tape to the Catalog. Automatic labeling saves time because it eliminates the need to label tapes prior to the backup operation. It also ensures that DPX correctly records the tape label in the Catalog, thereby eliminating the chance of human error.

  4. When the backup job finishes, DPX unloads the tape from device and issues a DISMOUNT request to ACSLS.

  5. ACSLS retrieves and stores the tape.

  6. ACSLS keeps track of the tape’s location, and DPX keeps track of the tape’s contents.
