Disaster Recovery of Lotus Domino Server

The following instructions apply to a completely destroyed Lotus Domino server. Before starting, make sure there is no semi-functional Domino server available. If there is, uninstall and reinstall the software.

  1. Transaction Log Restore

Before installing the Lotus Domino server, you should restore the transaction logs.

    1. From the File Restore window, select all transaction logs dated from the time of the last DATADIR base backup to the point-in-time you want to recover the database. Make sure the Existing File Handling field on the Restore Destination Options dialog box is set to Skip Existing Files and Directories.

    2. Restore to New Location. For Restore Destination, use the physical disk that contains the Lotus Domino logs directory.

    3. Run Restore.

    4. With operating system commands, copy or move the restored transaction logs into the Lotus Domino logs folder.

  2. Software Installation and Configuration Restore

    1. Reinstall the Lotus Domino server. Make sure the DATADIR path and size is the same as before. Do not set up any further.

    2. Restore the notes.ini and *.dir files from the last filesystem backup. Overwrite existing files.

    3. If you chose to restore transaction logs in step 1, edit the notes.ini file and add the following line:

    TRANSLOG_Recreate_Logctrl=1

This will enable recreating the transaction log control file from the restored logs. Remove any existing nlogctrl.lfh file from the log directory.

  3. Database Restore

    1. With operating system commands, remove (or move) all files except the .DIR files and folders from the newly installed Lotus Domino Data Directory.

    2. From the FileRestore window, select DATADIR.

    3. Restore to Original Location. This process may take some time since each database is rolled forward (recovered) in addition to being physically restored.

  4. DAOS Restore

    1. From the FileRestore window, select DAOSDIR.

    2. Restore to Original Location.

    3. Start the Lotus Domino server.
