Rerunning a Failed Backup Job

When a DPX SnapVault backup partially fails, you can select failed nodes and rerun the backup for the failed nodes only.

To rerun a backup for failed nodes:

  1. If you are not already in the job monitor, do either of the following:

    • Click Monitor Jobs on the function tab bar.

    • On the task panel, click Review Scheduled Jobs.

  2. A list of jobs appears that have run on the current day. If you navigate to the list by clicking Review Scheduled Jobs, you can click Review Jobs by Date in the task pane to select a day from a calendar.

  3. Right-click the failed backup to rerun.

  4. From the drop-down menu, select Failed Nodes Rerun. The Failed Nodes Rerun dialog box appears that displays failed nodes for the selected backup job.

  5. Select the failed nodes for which you want to rerun the backup. Either select or deselect nodes individually, or use the Select/deselect all check box.

  6. Click Run Now.

A new backup job is automatically created and run. The job name is composed of the prefix srj and a 10-digit number; for example, srj5538788962. This name is displayed in the Job Name column of the job monitor, with the original job name appended for informational purposes; for example, srj5538788962 (original-job-name). In the job log, after an initial message that identifies the job as a rerun of a previous job, only the original job name is used.

Note the following considerations:

  • If a rerun job succeeds, it can not be run again.

  • If a rerun job partially fails, you can launch it again by right-clicking the job instance and selecting Failed Nodes Rerun, and clicking Run Now. Launching this rerun job will overwrite the original rerun job.

  • A repeat of a rerun job only allows selection of nodes that failed on the previous rerun. As for any rerun, you can select or deselect from the list of failed nodes.

  • Once a node is successfully backed after a failed rerun, that node won’t be eligible for rerun from either the original job name or the rerun job name.

  • You can not run an original job and a rerun job simultaneously. The second job launched fails.

  • In the Rerun Failed Nodes dialog box, the listed failed nodes reflect the most recent run of the backup job or repeated rerun job. For example, note the following scenario:

    • Job XYZ runs at 10:00 a.m. Nodes A, B, C fail.

    • Job XYZ runs at 2:00 p.m. Node A fails.

    • Select Failed Nodes Rerun for the 10:00 a.m. XYZ job. Only Node A appears in the list of failed nodes.

    • Job XYX runs at 5:00 p.m. All nodes succeed.

    • Select Failed Nodes Rerun for the 10:00 a.m. XYZ job. No nodes appear in the list of failed nodes because the most recent run of the job had no failed nodes.

  • If the original job definition includes a prescript or postscript, the Failed Nodes Rerun dialog box displays a prescript field and a postscript field. The prescript and/or postscript is displayed in the fields. You can accept the prescript and/or postscript, remove them, or change them.

  • For SharePoint or clusters, dynamically added nodes are not eligible for rerun, but the failed virtual node will be listed in the Failed Nodes Rerun dialog and can be selected for rerun. If the dynamically added node is already part of the backup job definition, then it will be eligible for rerun in the event of failure.
