Requirements and Considerations for NDMP Hardware Encryption Backups
DPX supports NDMP hardware encryption only for tape drives attached to a NetApp storage system.
NDMP hardware encryption is implemented through a NDMP proxy server.

Hardware encryption is not supported for appliance-to-server backups. Hardware encryption is supported for appliance-to-appliance backups, including three-way backups.
Both the NDMP appliance to which the tape device is attached and the NDMP proxy server must be nodes in the Enterprise.
Tapes and Tape Devices
Encryption for specific LTO tapes and manufacturers is supported. See Chapter 38: Setting Up LTO Tape Drives for Hardware Encryption.
For tape devices supported by NetApp, see http://www.netapp.com/us/solutions/a-z/data-protectiondevices.html.
Interchanging tape type (for example, LTO-3) and device type (for example, LTO-4) can result in encryption and backup failure or both. The result may vary with hardware manufacturer. If you are interchanging tape types and device types, consult your hardware vendor documentation to determine the expected outcome.
