Protecting Backups Residing on Catalogic DPX Open Storage Server
The Catalogic DPX Archive feature enables longer term archiving to tape for a disk-based DPX open storage backups. The tape device or tape library must be SCSI- or Fibre-channel attached to a device server, ideally the DPX open storage server. DPX Archive is sometimes referred to as Double Protection, disk-to-disk-to-tape, or archive to media.
If a Block restore job is unable to restore from the backup on DPX open storage, the restore job automatically uses the DPX Archive backup.
Every DPX Archive backup is a full base Image backup, which, if run frequently, can use considerable space on the destination tapes. Therefore, it may be a good practice to schedule and run your DPX Archive jobs less frequently than their associated DPX Block Data Protection jobs.
DPX Archive jobs are generated through the job scheduler. For Block backup jobs to DPX open storage, the DPX job scheduler includes an option to select a DPX Archive destination.
When scheduling a Block backup job, schedule at least two job schedule elements, one for the backup-to-open storage server portion of your job and one for the DPX Archive.
The DPX Archive utility archives the latest backup instance. If you want to archive a specific Block backup instance, use the procedure described under Archiving Specific Backup Instances.
Note the following considerations related to DPX Archive:
Catalogic DPX Archive does not support archiving data from ReFS volumes and deduplicated NTFS volumes on Windows Server 2012 or later.
Catalogic DPX Archive does not support archiving of volumes with deduplication enabled for Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 or later.
To select individual files or directories to restore from a DPX Archive destination, enable File History. If File History is generated, it is stored in the DPX Catalog. Without File History, you are limited in the granularity of the resources to select for a regular restore.
When a Catalogic DPX Archive job transfers a raw image to tape and File History is not detected, DPX generates the File History and re-catalogs the task. User intervention is not required.
