Creating the Agentless VMware Backup Jobs from the Java-based DPX Management Interface

Take the following steps to back up a VM in VMware by using the Java-based DPX Management Interface:

  1. Log in to the Java-based DPX Management Interface. Open the Backup tab in the function tab bar.

  2. From the task panel, open Agentless VMware. In the Sources pane, expand the display to select VMware objects to back up.

    You can select multiple VMware objects for backup. Display these objects in either VM view or Host View.

  3. Click the View menu and select either Agentless VMware VM View or Agentless VMware Host View.

    • The VM view provides a list of virtual machines under each datacenter, VMs can also appear under folders on the list.

    • The Host view displays objects at the following levels:

    • vCenter

    • Datacenter

    • Host

    • Resource pool

    • Folder

    • VM

    Objects under an object selected for backup can be excluded.

  4. Select the VMware objects for backup.

  5. In the Destinations pane on the right, select a vStor server, NetApp, or DPX Open Storage Server. If selecting Catalogic DPX Open Storage Server, specify a volume.

  6. Click Set Notification Options to change default email notification options, and click Schedule Backup Job to set a schedule for running the job.

Tip. You can optionally select one or more virtualization proxy servers. See Setting Virtualization Proxy Servers in this section.

Source Options for Agentless VMware Backup. Click the Set Job Source Options tab to set source option for Agentless VMware Backup. You can edit the following options:

Report Job Failed if VM/VMDK is Skipped

This option specifies how the job status is reported in cases where unsupported VMs or VMDKs are skipped. Select Yes so that the backup job is reported as failed if a VM or VMDK is skipped because it is not supported. Select No so that the backup job succeeds with warning messages if unsupported VMs or VMDKs are encountered.

Use SSL Encryption

Use this option to configure the SSL encryption. Select Yes so that Catalogic DPX reads data from the ESX server using SSL encryption. Data written to secondary storage is not encrypted. Select No so that Catalogic DPX does not read data from the VMware ESXi server using SSL encryption.

Quiesce VM file system and applications

Use this option to quiesce VMs during the backup job. Select Yes so that Catalogic DPX quiesces the file system and applications on the source VM. Select No so that Catalogic DPX backs up the VM while it is running.

Include VMs with a DPX client installed

Use this option to include VMs that have the Catalogic DPX Client. Select Yes so that Catalogic DPX performs an agentless backup of VMs that contain a DPX client installation. Select No so that Catalogic DPX skips VMs that have the Catalogic DPX Client.

Running the Agentless VMware Backup Job You can save the Agentless VMware Backup job configurations, reuse and run the saved backup jobs.

Take the following steps to save the Agentless VMware Backup job:

  1. Click Save Backup Job on the Task Panel and save the backup job. The backup job is given the job type of BACKUP_VIRTUALIZATION, visible in the Job Type column in the Job Monitor.

  2. To run the backup immediately, click Run on the Task Panel. Alternatively, click Run and Monitor to display the Monitor Jobs window to monitor backup activity as the job runs.

Take the following steps to run the backup job again:

  1. From the Monitor Jobs window, select Select and Run Any Job on the Task Panel. In the dialog that appears, the Job Type drop-down menu lists BACKUP_VIRTUALIZATION among the job types.

  2. Select the BACKUP_VIRTUALIZATION job type. The Job Name drop-down menu then list only jobs of that job type.

  3. Select a backup job to run.
