Considerations When Selecting a Source in the Block Backup Wizard

In the source tree, some special volumes may appear. A discussion of special volumes follows:

Exchange, SharePoint, and SQL Server volumes

DPX Block Data Protection backs up Exchange, SharePoint, and SQL Server on supported platforms through DPX Block Data Protection database agents and restores the databases to a specific point-intime. The database agents integrate with Microsoft APIs and are aware of Exchange, SharePoint, and SQL Server. The databases display as recognizable, selectable volumes that appear as yellow disks on the backup and restore trees.

Oracle Volumes

Through DPX Block Data Protection, DPX provides block-level incremental backups of supported Oracle databases run under a variety of operating environments. Oracle volumes, databases, and tablespaces display in the management console for selectable backup and restore. Backup and restore functions – including scheduling, source/destination selection, and Catalog retention – are implemented from within the management console.

Oracle databases appear as yellow disks on the backup source pane. You can select Oracle databases or tablespaces for backup.

DFS Replicated Folders

DPX Block Data Protection provides support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 DFS replicated folders. Replicated folders on the selected client node appear under this container. Note that Block level backup of a replicated folder requires a backup of the local volume that the replicated folder resides on. When a folder is selected under the DFS Replicated Folders container, the entire volume is backed up automatically.

Bare Metal Recovery volume

Bare Metal Recovery provides high-performance, disk-based, bare metal disaster recovery capability for Windows and Linux. Bare Metal Recovery streamlines the recovery process, significantly reducing downtime when a root volume or operating system is inoperable.

Bare Metal Recovery utilizes the supplied Bare Metal Recovery CD, which initiates and controls fast, block-level restore from Block backups. Bare Metal Recovery eliminates the need to manually reinstall the operating system and root volume applications. Depending on recovery needs, Bare Metal Recovery can restore the operating system, system settings, partition information, applications, and data – all in a fraction of the time required by manual methods.

Selecting the BMR volume for Block backup instructs DPX to back up the System and Boot volumes and, in the case of a domain controller, the Active Directory. For master servers, the volume where the Catalog resides is also backed up. However, this backup of the Catalog is not suitable for Catalog restore. To protect the master server Catalog, use the Catalog function to perform backups and restores.

Tip. Selecting the entire node for backup ensures that a BMR recovery recreates the entire node.

Mount Points

A mount point is a path to a volume that may or may not have a drive letter. On the Backup window, mount point volumes appear in the following format:

mount_point[VOLUME{volume_name}]

where volume_name is the operating system assigned name.

The following is an example mount point display:

D:\win[VOLUME{3C01567F-BA0E-11D8-92A2-0002A5911362}]
