Backing up Oracle Databases by using Catalogic DPX Block Data Protection

This topic provides an overview of the process for backing up Oracle with the Catalogic DPX Block Data Protection. For further information about backup using Catalogic DPX, see Chapter 10: Block Backup and Introduction to Backup Functions in the Reference Guide.

Launching the Backup Window

To back up Oracle databases or tablespaces, select the Backup tab on the Function Tab Bar, then click Block Backup Wizard. Oracle databases appear as yellow disks in the Select Source step of the wizard.

You can select Oracle databases or tablespaces for backup.

Backup Set

The backup set includes the following:

  • Control file (binary) generated after taking tablespaces out of backup mode (control_file)

  • Text control file (control_file.txt)

  • If the database instance is using server parameter file, the backup includes a text parameter file (pfile.txt) generated from the server parameter file

  • Archive logs generated during the time when tablespaces are in backup mode

  • File systems hosting

  • Data files, ORACLE_HOME, and ORACLE_BASE

  • Local archive log locations

Special Backup Source Options for Oracle

The following options specific to the Catalogic DPX Block Data Protection for Oracle appear on the Application tab of the Select Job Source Options step of the wizard. These options can be set as defaults or can be customized for each job definition.

  • Oracle RMAN Cataloging Control

    For Oracle backups, determines whether to synchronize the RMAN Catalog after the job completes. Yes is the default.

Yes

Synchronize the RMAN Catalog after the job completes.

No

Do not synchronize the RMAN Catalog after the job completes. If you choose this option, the job is not cataloged in RMAN.
