Post-Restore: Reseeding the Passive DAG Database for Microsoft Exchange Server

After the restore completes it is essential to update (reseed) the suspended database copy back to the state of the restored active database. If you Resume replication in the Exchange Management Console without reseeding, the active and passive copies will not be in sync.

To reseed the passive database copy:

  1. On the Microsoft Exchange Management Console, select Mailbox from the tree in the left pane.

  2. In the Mailbox display in the right pane, select the database whose passive copy was suspended and needs to be reseeded. Note that the status indicated in the Copy Status column in the lower pane is Suspended.

  3. In the lower pane, right-click the suspended copy of the database.

  4. In the context menu, select Update Database Copy.

  5. In the Update Database Copy dialog box, select the check box Select a source server for reseeding. The source server is the Exchange server hosting the active database copy.

  6. Click Browse.

  7. The Select Mailbox Server dialog box displays all Exchange servers in the Exchange Organization. Select the Exchange server that is currently hosting the active database copy associated with the Suspended passive copy.

  8. Click OK.

  9. In the Update Database Copy dialog box, note that the selected source server, which hosts the active database copy, is displayed.

  10. Click Update.

  11. Note that the Update Database Copy dialog box now displays the active database and indicates that reseeding is completed.

  12. Click Finish.

Note that in the Mailbox display, the reseeded database now shows Healthy in the Copy Status column, indicating that the database copy is no longer suspended.

Tip. If the database still displays Suspended, right-click it and select Refresh from the context menu.

Note. In the case of multiple databases restored in a single job, you must repeat the post-restore (reseeding) process for each restored database.
