Adding an Agentless Virtualization Proxy Server
For VMware protection, your Enterprise must contain at least one proxy server, which is added to the Enterprise in the same way as any other node. If the node is installed as a proxy server, DPX detects that condition and sets Virtualization Proxy Server to Yes in the node configuration window.
Catalogic DPX automatically chooses proxy servers for a backup operation from available proxy servers and load balances among multiple available proxy servers.
The data transfer method for agentless backups is based on availability. If all the datastores of the VM are accessible to the proxy over the SAN, then SAN transfer method is used. If not, DPX checks for HotAdd. Proxies must exist in the same ESXi host as the backup target. If available, it will be used. If neither SAN nor HotAdd are available, then LAN (NBD) transfer method will be used.
Tip. Try to ensure that the proxy server has SAN or HotAdd access to the target datastore, since NBD backup is much slower.
Note the following recommendations for optimum performance:
Multiple proxy servers are recommended to enable load balancing for optimum backup performance. If sufficient proxy servers are provided, Agentless VMware Backup automatically uses the optimum number for load balancing. However, the number of proxy servers is limited by the number of allowed connections to vSphere and the ESX server.
Proxy servers should be located on the network close to the VMs being protected.
Do not use a vCenter node as an agentless virtualization proxy server.
