Chapter 7: NetApp SnapVault Management

You can use the SnapVault Management in Catalogic DPX to run and manage NetApp Data ONTAP primary or NetApp OSSV agent SnapVault transfers to a NetApp secondary system. NetApp SnapVault is managed through the Java-based Catalogic DPX Management Interface. Data transfer is coordinated directly between the primary source and the secondary target storage system.

Catalogic DPX SnapVault Management manages two types of NetApp backup:

  • NetApp ONTAP primary to NetApp secondary.

For more information about SnapVault backup between NetApp storage systems, see the NetApp document Data Protection Online Backup and Recovery Guide, supplied with your NetApp ONTAP installation.

  • Supported Open Systems SnapVault (OSSV) primary to NetApp secondary.

SnapVault Management provides the following benefits:

  • Defines backup source and storage destination

  • Monitors data transfer

  • Collects files history

  • Catalogs backups

  • Schedules incremental backups

  • Provides granular restore of files and folders

The data is saved as a read-only snapshot. Data can be restored from the secondary NetApp storage system more rapidly than from conventional Tape backups.

The NetApp storage system or NetApp OSSV agent host is scanned into the Catalogic DPX Enterprise as an NDMP node. It it not possible to load the Catalogic DPX Client to a NetApp storage system. It is possible to load the Catalogic DPX Client to an OSSV host, but this is not recommended since it could cause TCP/IP port conflicts between OSSV and Catalogic DPX.

Note that the NetApp OSSV agent provides some block-level protection for nodes where the Catalogic DPX Block Data Protection is not supported. NetApp OSSV agent backup does not include advanced Catalogic DPX Block Data Protection features, such as Instant Access, Bare Metal Recovery, Application Recovery, and Instant or Full Virtualization.
