Chapter 42: Using Quantum ADIC AML or SDLC Automated Storage Library
Quantum ADIC Automated Mixed Media Library (AML) and Quantum ADIC Scalar Distributed Library Controller (SDLC) are mixed-media library storage systems that can hold a very large number of storage media that may vary in type. The AML/SDLC consists of slots, drives, ports, and at least one robot.
Catalogic DPX interacts differently with an AML/SDLC than it does with other tape libraries and consequently is configured differently. However, once Catalogic DPX and the AML/SDLC are configured to work together, backups and restores are accessed through the management console in the same way as other tape libraries. This topic provides an overview of the AML/SDLC, outlines the configuration processes, and explains how Catalogic DPX communicates with the AML/SDLC.
With most tape libraries, Catalogic DPX keeps track of the contents of each slot and uses a device driver to control the storage device. Through the device driver, Catalogic DPX provides explicit instructions to the storage device. For example, Catalogic DPX will move the media changer to a specific slot, remove a specific tape, and insert the tape in a specific drive.
With an AML/SDLC, Catalogic DPX passes requests to the AML/SDLC library management software. The library management software keeps track of the location of the media volume and controls the media changer. In effect, the library management software manages the physical movement and storage location of media volumes, while Catalogic DPX manages the contents.
