Backing Up Data ONTAP Clusters

DPX supports NetApp Clustered Data ONTAP for NDMP backup and restore. Support depends on the version of DPX and Data ONTAP.

Data ONTAP provides limited information to the DPX management console. The result is that details below the volume level do not appear in the tree structure of the DPX backup source pane.

To back up specific directories, files, or snapshots below the volume level:

  1. Drill down to the volume.

  2. Right-click on the volume. Select Specify a New Path. The NDMP Directory Path dialog appears.

  3. In the NDMP Directory Path dialog box, enter the path to the directory, file, or snapshot to choose. Enter a path relative to the volume starting point. You can specify multiple files or directories if you separate them by a space. If file or directory names contain spaces, enclose them in double quotes to ensure they are treated as a single entry. When specifying a path, use UNIX syntax ( / ).

Considerations for Data ONTAP Clusters

  • When creating an SVM in a cluster through NetApp OnCommand System Manager or through other means, it is possible that certain protocols such as NDMP are not “allowed”. The following command provides you with a list of allowed protocols:

>vserver show -vserver <vserver_name>
  • If NDMP is disallowed, allow it by using a command similar to the following:

>vserver modify -vserver <vserver_name> -allowed-protocols
nfs,cifs,fcp,iscsi,ndmp
  • NDMP Cluster Aware Backup (CAB) is supported for Clustered Data ONTAP nodes. Cluster Aware Backup is an NDMP v4 protocol extension that enables DPX to determine if volumes and media devices are located on the same node in a cluster, and to establish a data connection to the node that owns a volume. With the CAB extension supported by the DPX, the NDMP server provides Affinity information about volumes and media devices. Using this Affinity information, DPX knows to perform a local backup instead of a three-way backup if there exist a volume and media device that are located on the same node in a cluster.
