Setting Backup Default Encryption Options

Use encryption options to control how and when a job is encrypted.

To check the default backup encryption options or edit default backup encryption options:

  1. Open the Configure Defaults window by selecting Configure from the Function Tab bar and clicking Defaults.

  2. Expand the Backup options.

  3. Click the Encryption icon or name to select it. The selection is indicated by the selection check box next to the option icon, and the Backup Encryption Options dialog appears.

  4. Optionally enter or revise each field:

Network Encryption

Encrypt data while transmitting it through networks to enhance security. Typically, the encrypted data transfer can lower the data transfer speed. Select Yes to enable the encrypted data transfer. Or, select No to transfer data without encryption.

  • Encrypt Data

    Specifies if the data written to tape is encrypted. This option does not relate to data transport.If network transport encryption is important, use the Network Encryption option.

No data encryption

Data is not encrypted at the device server.

Encrypt data at the device server (primary and twin tape)

Data is encrypted at the device server of both the primary and twin tapes. Hardware compression does not matter if same tape model/media is used.

Encrypt data at the device server (primary tape only)

For the primary tape, data is encrypted at the device server. Hardware compression does not matter.

Encrypt data at the device server (twin tape only)

For the twin tape, data is encrypted at the device server. Hardware compression must be disabled during original backup job.

  • Encryption Type

    Encrypts transmitted data at the hardware device.

Software

Encrypts data while it is being transmitted through the network.

Hardware

Encrypts data at the tape device.
