Configuration Overview for AML/SDLC

Because a physical AML/SDLC may contain thousands of media volumes and many media types, the AML/SDLC library is subdivided into virtual tape libraries. The AML/SDLC software supports up to fifty virtual tape libraries. For example, an AML/SDLC with 30,000 volumes might be divided into thirty virtual tape libraries of 1,000 volumes a piece. Each virtual tape library can contain only one media type.

DPX treats each virtual tape library as if it were a standalone tape library.

Before adding AML/SDLC virtual tape libraries to DPX, the virtual tape libraries and the nodes must be configured to recognize one another. This is accomplished in two steps:

  • Update a configuration file on the AML/SDLC. This update defines each virtual tape library and describes the locations of the nodes that will serve as the virtual tape library controllers. This procedure is described in greater detail later in this topic.

  • Create several configuration files on the nodes that will serve as virtual tape library controllers. These files configure DPX to communicate with the AML/SDLC library. This procedure is described in greater detail later in this topic.

After you have completed the configuration files on the AML/SDLC and on the nodes, you add each AML/SDLC virtual tape library to DPX as if it were an ordinary tape library. The few differences are described later in this topic.

Note. For Windows TCP installed DPX, DPX requires NobleNet Portmapper installed and started as a Windows service to communicate with an ADIC SDLC server. You can install NobleNet Portmapper from the ADIC SDLC distribution CD as part of the ADIC SDLC installation process.
