NetApp SnapVault Management Setup and Configuration

SnapVault is enabled through license keys. There are two kinds of license keys: primary and secondary.

Pre-configuring NetApp Storage Systems

You must perform the following steps on your NetApp storage systems before adding them to your Enterprise if you want to use them for SnapVault Management backups and restores.

To pre-configure NetApp Storage Systems for SnapVault Management jobs:

  1. Enter the license keys.

    • Enter the NetApp primary license key into the primary license key field of each source (primary) storage system.

    • Enter the NetApp secondary license key into the secondary license key field of each destination (secondary) storage system. Secondary systems must be running NetApp Data ONTAP and configured with NDMP version 4 or later. For details about setting NDMP versions, see in the DPX 4.9 Reference Guide.

See also. For the latest system compatibility details regarding supported hardware, file systems, applications, operating systems, and service packs, see the .

Older versions of ONTAP do not permit storage systems to have both primary and secondary licenses installed. Newer systems starting from ONTAP 8.0 allow a storage system to serve both purposes. However, It is generally not recommended for a primary storage system to act as a secondary as well. For additional information, see the Best Practices Guide in the .

    • If a NetApp secondary storage system is the destination for backups from NetApp OSSV agents, ensure NetApp license keys are installed for each supported open system.

  2. Enable required interfaces. For details on NetApp storage system configuration, see in the DPX 4.9 Deployment Guide. The topic applies generally to backup to or from a NetApp storage system.

For more information about pre-configuring NetApp storage systems, see the NetApp System Administration Data Protection Guide.

Pre-configuring Open Systems

Primary SnapVault nodes using NetApp OSSV must be set up and defined before being configured for Catalogic DPX.

To pre-configure an Open Systems node as a NetApp SnapVault primary:

  1. Install the NetApp OSSV agent on the desired nodes. The NetApp OSSV agent should not be installed on nodes running the agent.

  1. Use the default port setting. Port 10000 is the standard port used for communicating with a NetApp OSSV node.

For more information about pre-configuring NetApp OSSV, see:

  • The NetApp System Administration Data Protection Guide.

Configuring ONTAP Primary and OSSV SnapVault Nodes for Catalogic DPX

All ONTAP primary and OSSV agent nodes must be configured for DPX. This is done using the DPX desktop interface to add the node to the Enterprise. The following are considerations for configuring SnapVault Management nodes:

  • Configuring a NetApp OSSV Agent Node in DPX NetApp OSSV nodes must be configured in as NDMP nodes. Complete the following fields:

    • In the Resolvable Node Name or IP Address field, enter the IP address.

Note. NetApp OSSV backup destination storage devices require NetApp SnapVault secondary licenses and the appropriate OSSV agent primary licenses.

See also. For the latest system compatibility details regarding supported hardware, file systems, applications, operating systems, and service packs, see the .

The Configuring an Open Systems Platform topic on NetApp’s NOW website at .

Configuring a NetApp Primary or Secondary Node in DPX SnapVault primary nodes and SnapVault secondary nodes must be added to your Enterprise as NDMP nodes. When you add a primary node or SnapVault secondary system as a node by using the Configure Enterprise window, DPX queries the appliance to ascertain if it is SnapVault-enabled and whether it is a primary, a secondary, or both. DPX displays this information in the Edit Node dialog after the node is added. See .

In the Port field, specify the port you defined during installation of NetApp OSSV in . The port is typically 10000.
