NetApp SnapVault Management Backup

Restrictions. NetApp SnapVault Management backup and restore are only accessible through the web interface.

The Block Backup window displays NetApp ONTAP primary storage nodes, NetApp OSSV agent nodes, and Catalogic DPX Block Data Protection nodes. Nodes supporting Block backup are displayed in a typical source tree structures.

Define a backup job as described in .

Tip. Due to technical limitations in the NetApp storage systems, keep your backup job names short. The job name becomes part of the qtree name on the NetApp storage systems. If a qtree name is too long, you may be prevented from seeing volumes on the destination storage.

The first time a backup is run, the job creates the necessary relationship between the primary and secondary systems. You generally do not need to manage these relationships manually; DPX automatically removes relationships as you delete or modify backup jobs. In some cases, you may need to remove SnapVault relationships manually, such as for troubleshooting with Catalogic Software Data Protection Technical Support. For information about deleting a SnapVault relationship manually, read the Knowledge Base article .

NetApp Primary to NetApp Secondary Backup

For SnapVault backups from a primary NetApp storage system to a SnapVault secondary system, you can select data to back up at the volume level or the qtree level, or you can select all non-qtree data.

To back up an entire volume:

  1. From the Block Backup window, assure that disk selection is enabled. To do so, right-click the Enterprise icon. A context menu displays. If the context menu includes the entry Disable Disk Selection, disk selection is enabled. If not, click Enable Disk Selection on the context menu. Note that the choice is persistent until disk selection is disabled.

  2. Select the volume for backup in the source pane.

To back up qtree data:

  • Select the qtree in the source pane.

To back up non-qtree data

  • Drill down into the source NetApp volume and select the object BACKUP NON QTREE DATA.

NetApp OSSV Agent to NetApp Secondary Backup

From the Block Backup window, find the NetApp OSSV agent node to back up from. Select either:

  • Whole node

  • Individual volume

Selecting the SnapVault Management Backup Destination

SnapVault Management backup destinations are selected in the usual way, by clicking on a resource in the right pane of the Block Backup window.

For SnapVault Management backups, the first destination node you select becomes the default destination node for subsequent source selections, but you can select a different destination for each source selected. Each source/destination pair constitutes a separate task within the backup job, even if all the destinations are the same.

Tip. You can save a Block backup definition and manually run the job without defining a schedule by clicking Run.

Other SnapVault Management Backup Considerations

  • Defining a new SnapVault Management job with a new job name directs DPX to do a base backup.

  • For SnapVault Management jobs, the status of a job must be Waiting before you can suspend it.

For a detailed description of backup scheduling, see . For SnapVault Management backups, the backup type (base, incremental, or differential) is irrelevant. For any volume backed up in a SnapVault Management job, the initial backup is a base backup, and all subsequent backups are incremental; that is, only changed blocks are transferred. Note that an instance of a SnapVault Management backup (base or incremental) is a virtual image of the entire source volume at a particular point-in-time.
